Licensed vs Non Licensed Relationship Professionals

The difference between a licensed clinician and a relationship coach, what each can help with, how to choose, and when to go outside PairLume for clinical care.

PairLume lists two kinds of professionals, and we label them plainly because the difference matters for what you get.

Licensed professionals

A licensed professional holds a current licence from a government or professional body in their jurisdiction. That licence carries a regulator, a code of ethics, a complaints route that exists outside our platform, and a defined scope of practice. Titles vary by country: marriage and family therapist, clinical psychologist, licensed professional counsellor, registered psychotherapist, and others.

They can work with clinical presentations, and they are accountable to a body that can restrict or revoke their right to practise.

Non licensed wellness professionals

Relationship coaching is not a licensed profession in most countries. A skilled coach may hold serious training, certification from a recognised programme, and years of practice, without any licence existing to hold.

On PairLume, non licensed professionals work on skills and structure: communication patterns, conflict repair, planning, boundaries, intimacy conversations, and follow through between sessions. They do not diagnose, treat conditions, or provide clinical care.

How to choose

Pick a licensed professional when there is a diagnosis in the room, when trauma is driving the pattern, when one partner is in a mental health crisis, or when you may need documentation for anything formal.

Pick a coach when the relationship is fundamentally workable and the problem is repetition: the same argument every fortnight, drifting apart on a long distance schedule, a decision you keep postponing, or a habit neither of you can hold on your own.

Plenty of couples use both. A weekly guided session for practice, a coach monthly for accountability, and a licensed clinician for the piece that needs clinical work.

When to go outside PairLume entirely

If there is abuse, coercion or fear in the relationship, couples work is not the right first step and can make things less safe. Go to a specialist service in your area. Our [crisis resources](/crisis) page lists lines you can call now.

A note on jurisdiction

A licence is jurisdictional. A licensed clinician in one country is not automatically licensed to provide clinical care to you in yours. When a professional works across borders on PairLume, the work stays inside wellness and educational scope. If you need clinical care under your own regulator, book locally.
