How PairLume Guided Couples Sessions Work, Step by Step

What happens in a live PairLume session: how both partners join, how the guidance stays balanced, what gets saved, and what the session will not do.

A guided session is a structured conversation. It is not a chatbot you vent at, and it is not a video call with a stranger. Both partners are in the same live room from their own devices, and the guidance moves the conversation along.

Starting one

One partner creates a session and gets a short join code or link. The other joins from their own phone, laptop or tablet, from the same sofa or a different time zone. Each person picks a nickname for the room. Nothing about the setup requires a lengthy form.

What the session actually does

The guide opens with a frame: what are we here to talk about, and what would a good outcome look like tonight. From there it does four things repeatedly.

1. Keeps the turn taking even, so one partner does not run the room. 2. Reflects what each person said in language the other can hear. 3. Slows escalation, by naming the shift from the topic to the tone. 4. Ends with something concrete, so the conversation leaves the room with you.

You can speak or type. Speech works in either direction, so you can talk out loud and hear the reply back if reading on a phone in the evening is too much.

Language

The guide replies in the language you write or speak in. Couples who mix two languages at home can keep doing that in a session.

What gets saved

A session has a recap: the topic, the ground the conversation covered, and what you agreed to try. Both partners can see the shared session. Solo sessions are yours alone and your partner does not see them.

What it will not do

It will not take a side or tell you who is right. It will not diagnose either of you. It will not carry on if the conversation turns into abuse. It will stop and point to real help.

Free and paid use

Guided sessions are free with limits on length and volume. If you run long weekly sessions, the paid upgrade removes those limits. Details are on [pricing explained](/how it works/pricing).

Getting the most from one

Book thirty minutes when you are both awake enough to think. Pick one topic, not five. Start with the smallest true version of the problem rather than the biggest accusation. And treat the closing agreement as real, because the couples who improve fastest are the ones who come back the next week and check what happened.
