PairLume vs BetterHelp, Talkspace, Regain and Couples Apps
An honest, detailed comparison of PairLume against big teletherapy platforms, relationship habit apps, in person couples counselling, directories and workplace EAPs, including licensing, pricing shape, refunds and where each one is the better choice.
Most couples looking for help end up choosing between five very different things that all get filed under the same search. They are not the same product, they do not cost the same, and they are not held to the same standard of proof about who is on the other side of the screen.
This page lays the categories out next to each other, then links to a dedicated page for each of the big names.
The five categories
1. Large teletherapy platforms. BetterHelp, Talkspace, Regain. Subscription based, licensed clinicians, matched to you by the platform. 2. Relationship habit apps. Paired, Lasting, Relish, Gottman Card Decks. Prompts, quizzes and exercises. Very cheap, no live human in most tiers. 3. In person couples counselling. A local licensed therapist, a room, a fixed weekly hour. 4. Directories and EAPs. Psychology Today, Zencare, your employer assistance programme. A list of names, or a small block of free sessions. 5. PairLume. A marketplace of individually verified professionals, including licensed therapists, sitting alongside an AI guide, a library and a community, with pay per session pricing and a wallet.
Where PairLume actually sits
PairLume is the only one of the five where all of the following are true at once: you can book a licensed therapist whose licence we checked against the issuing board , you can also work with a non licensed coach at a lower price and see clearly which is which, you can run a guided session at 1am with no booking at all , and you pay per session rather than per month.
The verified tick on a PairLume profile is not a badge for filling in a bio. It means we confirmed a current therapy licence with the issuing board, which is the same standard the clinical platforms hold, applied one profile at a time. Read [how we verify](/how we verify) and [licensed and non licensed, explained](/how we verify/licensed and unlicensed).

What we do not claim
PairLume is a relationship wellness platform. Sessions booked through it are guidance and education. Individual licensed professionals on PairLume hold their own licences and practise within their own scope and jurisdiction, and the platform itself does not diagnose, treat or prescribe. If you need a diagnosis, a treatment plan, medication, court ordered counselling or insurance billed care, a clinical provider or your own doctor is the right route, and we will say so rather than keep you here.
When another option is the better buy
You want weekly unlimited messaging with one clinician and you will use it every week. A subscription platform is cheaper per message. You need insurance to pay. Take a local licensed provider who bills your plan. There is abuse, coercion or immediate danger. Do not use a couples format. See [safety and crisis](/how it works/safety). You want prompts to build a small daily habit and nothing more. A habit app for a few dollars a month is enough.
Everywhere else, the mix of a checked licence, a price per session, and something to use tonight is the reason people stay.
