How PairLume Uses AI in Guided Sessions, and Its Limits
Plain detail on the AI facilitator inside PairLume sessions: what it is for, how it stays neutral, what languages it handles, and the lines it will not cross.
The guide inside a PairLume session is an AI facilitator. Being precise about that is more useful than pretending otherwise.
What it is for
Structure. It opens the conversation, keeps turn taking even, reflects each partner's point back in language the other can hear, slows the moment where a topic turns into a tone, and closes with something concrete. That is the job of a facilitator, and it is a job software can do reasonably well.
How it stays neutral
The guide is instructed not to rule on who is right. When one partner asks it to take a side, it will name the request and return to the pattern underneath. Neutrality is the point: a facilitator that awards points would be worse than no facilitator, because it hands one partner a weapon.
Language
It replies in whatever language you write or speak in, and it handles couples who switch mid sentence between two languages at home.
Voice
You can speak instead of typing, and hear the reply instead of reading it. Couples on a sofa in the evening often prefer voice in both directions.
What it will not do
Diagnose either of you. Provide clinical treatment or medical advice. Continue a session that has turned into abuse. It stops and surfaces [crisis resources](/crisis). Pretend to be a licensed human. When something needs a professional, it says so and points to the [marketplace](/wellness professionals) or to local care.
What it is not good at
Fine reading of the room. It does not see your face, your history, or the thing you are not saying. A skilled human in a live session notices what a text stream cannot, which is exactly why the marketplace exists alongside the guide rather than instead of it.
Your conversations and model training
Session content is not used to train public models. What is stored and who can see it is set out in [privacy and your data](/how it works/privacy).
When to switch to a human
Switch when the same topic survives three structured attempts, when a clinical issue is driving the pattern, or when one of you needs to be heard by a person rather than a process. Structure is a tool, not a therapist.
