When NOT to Use PairLume (Honest Limits)

The honest list of situations where a live AI couples session is the wrong tool, and where to go instead. We'd rather lose the user than the trust.

# When NOT to Use PairLume

Most product pages tell you all the cases their product is great for. This page is the opposite. Below is the honest, specific list of situations where PairLume is the wrong tool. If you are in any of these, please close this tab and use the resources at the bottom of this post instead. We mean that.

We are publishing this for two reasons. First, because using the wrong tool in any of these situations can make things measurably worse. Second, because trust is the only currency that matters in this category, and trust is built by being clear about your limits before someone finds them out the hard way.

## 1. Active abuse , physical, sexual, or coercive

If there is current physical violence, sexual coercion, or a pattern of coercive control in the relationship, **a live two-person AI session is not safe and not appropriate**. It can give the abusive partner another surface to perform on, and it can pressure the targeted partner into "communicating" inside a dynamic where honest communication has already become dangerous.

The right move is a domestic violence hotline, a safety plan, and an individual professional, not a couples format of any kind, AI or human.

- **US:** 1-800-799-7233 (National Domestic Violence Hotline) - **UK:** 0808 2000 247 (National Domestic Abuse Helpline) - **AU:** 1800 737 732 (1800RESPECT)

## 2. Untreated active addiction

Active substance addiction (alcohol, opioids, stimulants, gambling) reshapes a relationship from the inside in ways that no communication tool can fix. Couples work, AI or otherwise, almost always fails until the addicted partner is in active treatment.

The right starting point is individual treatment, an addiction-trained therapist, and a support framework like SMART Recovery or AA. Relationship work can resume meaningfully once recovery is underway.

## 3. Severe mental illness in active crisis

If either partner is currently in crisis , actively suicidal, in a psychotic episode, in a severe manic episode, in an eating-disorder medical crisis , couples-format work is not the priority. Stabilisation is.

If you or your partner are thinking about suicide, please contact your local crisis line right now:

- **US:** 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) - **UK / ROI:** Samaritans 116 123 - **AU:** Lifeline 13 11 14

PairLume's AI is not designed for crisis intervention. It will refer up. It is far better that you go directly to the right resource without the detour.

## 4. The first 90 days after a discovered affair

After an affair is discovered, both partners are in a specific psychological state that does not respond well to ordinary couples work. The injured partner is often experiencing trauma symptoms. The partner who had the affair is often oscillating between defensiveness, shame, and over-explaining. Both states need a trained human, often individually before they need each other.

The research and clinical consensus here is clear: the first 60,90 days after disclosure are best handled by an affair-trained couples specialist, not by self-directed work. Once a stabilisation phase has been reached and a professional says it is appropriate, an AI session can become a useful supplement.

## 5. One partner does not consent or feels coerced into using it

If your partner has not freely chosen to be in the session , if you have pushed, threatened, or made it a condition of staying , the session is not a couples session. It is a performance with one author. The AI cannot fix that, and the data from forced sessions is, in our experience, almost always misleading for both partners.

Both partners need to actually want to be there. If they do not, the work to do is not in the session. It is the conversation about why.

## 6. Active legal proceedings between the partners

If the two of you are in an adversarial legal situation (divorce filings, custody disputes, restraining orders), nothing in a couples session is privileged the way conversations with a licensed therapist can be in some jurisdictions. Things said in a session can theoretically end up in evidence. We do not want to be that.

For couples in this situation, please use a licensed mediator, a family law professional, and individual therapists.

## 7. Diagnosable conditions that need clinical assessment

PairLume cannot diagnose. We will not pretend to. If either partner is presenting with symptoms consistent with PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorder, an eating disorder, ADHD that has never been assessed, or any other condition that warrants clinical care, a couples format is not where that assessment happens. It happens with a licensed clinician, often individually, often before any joint work.

A live AI session may continue to be useful as a supplement once the individual clinical picture is clearer, but it is not the right entry point.

## 8. You want a verdict, not a conversation

Some users come to a couples format hoping the third presence will tell them they are right. The AI will not. It is not built to. If you are looking for a tool that will side with you against your partner, PairLume is not that tool, and you will leave the session frustrated.

If what you actually want is to leave the relationship and feel better about the decision, that is what an individual therapist is for.

## What this means for the rest of you

Most couples reading this post are not in any of the categories above. Most couples are in the category of "we love each other, we fight about the same three things every month, and we want to do the work without it being a crisis." That is the category PairLume is built for.

If you are in that category, welcome. The session is free, the work is real, and the conversation will be different than it would have been if you were alone with each other. That is the entire promise.

If you are in one of the categories above, please use one of the resources we listed. We will be here when (and if) the time is right.
