What a Therapist Cannot Do for You

The limits are not fine print. Knowing them is what makes the hour worth paying for.

Expectations set badly are the main reason people conclude that professional help does not work. Here is what the hour cannot deliver, however good the practitioner is.

## They cannot decide whether you should stay

A professional can help you see the pattern clearly, name what you each want, and test whether change is possible. They cannot tell you to leave or to stay, and any who does has stepped outside their role. Discernment work exists specifically for that question, and even there the decision stays with you.

## They cannot make your partner change

The only person in the room whose behaviour anyone can influence is the one who wants to change something. A skilled couples practitioner will keep both of you accountable, but they are not an enforcement mechanism, and using them as one poisons the work.

## They cannot referee who was right

Most couples arrive wanting a verdict, at least privately. A good practitioner will refuse it, because a verdict changes nothing about next Tuesday. What they do instead is describe the sequence, which is more useful and much less satisfying.

## They cannot compensate for nothing happening between sessions

An hour a fortnight is roughly half a percent of your waking life. It cannot outweigh the other ninety nine and a half percent. Sessions set direction, practice does the work, and this is the single largest predictor of whether anything shifts.

## They cannot deliver a result in one session

Occasionally one session produces a genuine turn. It is not the norm and it should not be the expectation. A practitioner promising it is selling.

## They cannot work outside their scope

A coach cannot treat a clinical condition. A licensed clinician in another jurisdiction cannot provide regulated clinical care to you where you are. Nobody in this field gives legal advice or prescribes. Those limits protect you, and a professional who respects them is safer than one who does not.

## They cannot keep you safe in an unsafe relationship

If there is fear, coercion or physical harm, joint work is not the right first step and can increase risk. That needs a specialist service, and our [crisis resources](/crisis) page lists lines you can contact now.

## What they can do, which is a lot

Interrupt an escalation before it completes. See the loop neither of you can see from inside it. Give language to something you have felt for years and never named. Hold you to something you agreed. Tell you plainly when the thing you need is not the thing they do.

That is a real service, worth real money. It is just not the one people imagine when they book.
