How to Prepare for a Session So It Is Not Wasted

Fifteen minutes of preparation changes what a paid session can cover. Here is exactly what to do.

A session with no preparation spends its first twenty minutes deciding what to talk about, usually by arguing about it. That is a third of the hour, at full price.

## Pick one thing, and make it small

Not communication. Not respect. One recurring situation with a time and a place. Sunday evenings before the week starts. The handover when one of you gets home. Money conversations that begin fine and end badly.

A small target lets a professional see the actual sequence. A large one produces a philosophical discussion.

## Write your sentence

One sentence each on what you want to be different. Write it separately, do not compare notes beforehand, and bring both. Half the value of this exercise is discovering that you wanted different things.

## Bring one specific example, recent

With detail: what was said, in what order, and where it turned. Not a summary of the last five years. Practitioners work from sequence, and a real example gives them one.

If you can each describe the same incident separately, that is even better, because the difference between the two accounts is often the whole problem.

## Do not rehearse together

Preparing together tends to turn into pre negotiating, and then you arrive with an agreed script that hides what actually happens. Prepare separately, arrive honest.

If you want to practise saying a hard thing out loud first, do that with a structured solo session rather than with each other.

## Sort out the logistics an hour before

Headphones each. A door that closes. Devices charged. Childcare handled. Any of these failing costs you real minutes, and the session does not extend to compensate.

If you are joining from two locations, agree that in advance rather than discovering it at the start.

## Arrive slightly early, not straight from an argument

Five minutes of quiet beats walking in mid escalation. Sessions that begin at full volume spend their energy on de escalation rather than on the pattern underneath.

## Afterwards, protect the work

Write down the single thing you agreed. Do not relitigate the session that night. Put the next booking in the calendar while you still remember why you wanted it.

## The compound effect

Preparation is the difference between paying for a conversation and paying for progress. Fifteen minutes before an hour is a good trade, and it is the cheapest improvement available to anyone using this kind of service.
