Is AI Therapy Safe? An Honest Answer
A grounded look at what AI can and cannot do for your emotional wellness, and how to use it without losing yourself in it.
People ask if AI therapy is safe the way they ask if running is safe. It depends what you do with it, how long you do it, and whether you would notice if something started to hurt.
So here is the honest answer. AI is safe when you treat it as a thinking partner, not a replacement for a human you trust. It is unsafe when you use it to avoid the people who actually know you, or to spiral on a hard night without ever closing the tab.
## What AI is good at
It is good at slowing you down. When your thoughts are loud, typing them out and watching them come back to you in calmer words is, by itself, a useful act. A short structured prompt can move you from reactive to reflective in a few minutes.
That is the whole idea behind our [3 minute check in](/assessment). You answer a few questions, you read back what you actually feel, and you walk away with one thing to do next. No diagnosis. No long story. Just a small, clear moment of honesty with yourself.
## What AI is not for
It is not for crisis. If you are thinking about hurting yourself or someone else, please call a local emergency line or a crisis service. An app, including ours, is not the right room for that.
It is not for replacing the people who love you. Texting an AI for two hours is not the same as one ten minute call with a friend. The friend remembers you tomorrow.
It is also not for medication, diagnosis, or anything a licensed professional needs to do.
## How to use it without losing yourself
Set a time limit. Three to ten minutes is plenty for one sitting. If you find yourself still typing an hour later, that is information.
Notice the language. A good wellness tool reflects you back to you. If you feel more confused after a session, not less, change tools.
Talk to one human about what came up. Even one sentence to one person closes the loop.
## A small practice you can try right now
Open the [3 minute check in](/assessment). Put on a timer if you want. Answer honestly. Then put the phone down and do the one thing the check in suggests, even if it is just drinking a glass of water.
That is what safe looks like in practice. Small, honest, finished.
