How to Handle Trolls in PairLume Community

A short field guide to staying steady when someone shows up in your thread just to pick a fight.

Every community gets them. Someone posts a comment that feels off, or aggressive, or built to bait. Your stomach drops. Your fingers hover over the reply box. This is the moment where a lot of good posts get ruined.

Here is a calmer way through it.

## Read it twice

The first read is emotional. The second read is honest. Sometimes what looked like an attack is a clumsy question. Sometimes what looked like a joke is a jab. Reading twice tells you which one it is.

## Ask one question, then stop

If you are not sure it was bad faith, ask a single question. "Can you say more about what you meant?" is enough. If they double down or get nastier, you have your answer.

## Do not perform for the crowd

The urge to write a long takedown is strong. Do not. Long replies to trolls make them the center of your thread. The people who came to hear your story stop reading. Your post ends up being about them instead of you.

## Use the tools

Every PairLume room has three tools built in: - Report the comment so moderators see it - Block the account so you never see them again - Delete your own comment if you already replied and regret it

Using these is not weakness. It is upkeep.

## Protect the rest of the thread

If your post is getting swarmed, add an update at the top: "Adding a note to say I am not answering hostile comments below. Reporting where needed." This tells kind people it is still safe to reply. It tells hostile people the door is closed.

## Step away

If your heart is racing, close the app. Go get water. Look out a window. Trolls run on attention. Silence starves them faster than any clever reply.

## When to loop in a mod

Loop in a moderator when: - Someone is targeting you across multiple posts - Someone is posting personal details about you - Someone is using slurs or threatening language - A pattern is forming, not just a bad day

Moderators can time out, remove, or ban accounts. Give them the receipts and let them work.

## Take care of yourself afterward

Even a small hostile exchange can leave a mark. Talk to your partner about it. Or write a private note somewhere just for you. The goal is not to pretend it did not happen. The goal is to not carry it into your evening.

Trolls are a small part of a large community. Handle them like weather. Note it, adjust for it, and get back to the good conversations waiting for you.
