Between Session Work That Actually Helps

Why most homework fails, and the three kinds that survive contact with a normal week.

Almost everyone leaves a session intending to do the thing, and a large share arrive at the next one having not done it. The problem is usually the design of the task, not the character of the person.

## Why homework fails

It is too big. Have a proper conversation about money is a project, not a task.

It is unscheduled. Anything without a time attached competes with everything else and loses.

It requires both people to be in a good mood simultaneously, which is rarer than it sounds.

It has no observable finish. You cannot tell whether you did it.

## Kind one: the small repeated behaviour

One thing, one to three times, at a set time. A ten minute check in on Wednesday evening. Saying the thing you noticed rather than the thing you concluded, once a day.

Small and repeated beats large and singular because it changes the default rather than producing an event.

## Kind two: the rehearsal

Practising a conversation before having it. This is where structured guided sessions earn their place: they are free at the base tier, available at eleven at night, and nobody is hurt by a badly phrased first attempt.

Rehearsing your side of a hard conversation halves the chance that it derails in the first two minutes.

## Kind three: the noticing task

No behaviour change at all, just observation. Notice when the tone shifts. Notice what you feel in your body thirty seconds before you go quiet.

This one is underrated. You cannot interrupt a pattern you cannot see coming, and noticing tasks are the only kind that reliably work when one person is not fully on board.

## Make it checkable

Before the session ends, agree what you would point to next time as evidence it happened. Two check ins, not more communication. One rehearsal completed. Three noticed moments written down.

If you cannot say what evidence would look like, the task is too vague to survive.

## Where the material fits

Courses and books are for the weeks between sessions, not instead of them. A chapter that explains the pattern you are living makes the next paid hour more efficient, because you arrive with vocabulary and can skip the explanation.

## When you did not do it

Say so at the start rather than at minute forty. Not doing the task is information: it was too big, it was badly timed, or one of you was not actually agreed. All three are useful and none of them are a moral failure.

A professional who cannot hear that without irritation is telling you something about how the rest of the work will go.
